The following movies are titles that I have rejected from consideration for Census Bloodbath, my project where I watch and review every slasher movie from the 1980s. I have indicated the reasons why these movies (which I have seen listed as slashers by various sources) are not included. If you have strong objections and think that a particular title should be included, sound off in the comments. I will not budge on the ones with asterisks next to their listings, which I have seen and assessed personally.

So I may have taken a years-long hiatus in the middle of 1985, but from now I do intend to keep on moving forward at a semi-regular pace with Census Bloodbath, my project to watch and review every slasher movie from the 1980s. Of course, that will get more and more difficult as the decade careens straight into the video boom, allowing a higher number of lower quality movies to flood the market all at once, but in 1986, that hasn't 100% kicked in yet.

That doesn't mean we don't have a lot on our plate though. At my latest count, the year has a whopping 48 titles to get through! While 1985 had just two more slashers than 1984, we're now inflating that year's number by an additional 19 titles. So let's take a look at what lies ahead, shall we?

I've already reviewed all the big franchise titles and most of the major releases from 1986. So what's left? Some of these titles are Z-list classics that I'm excited to finally take a look at (Hunter's Blood, Spookies, Crawlspace), some I had literally never heard of before doing the research for this list (Escape from Coral Cove, Neon Maniacs, Las Vegas Serial Killer), and at least one is recognized as a good movie by actual real people who exist outside of the cult film space (Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer). I can't wait to find out which ones I love, which ones I hate, and which ones are so baffling I have no choice but to respect them!

Can you believe we're actually finally past the halfway point of this project? It hasn't been easy, believe you me. But now that we've officially exited the first Golden Age of the slasher film, we're entering a particularly interesting period. According to accepted slasher wisdom, A Nightmare on Elm Street was the project that kicked the slasher back into high gear, with a new boost of supernatural inspiration driving the storylines. 

This is true, but it takes a little longer than average to make an effects-heavy movie like that, even a cheap, shitty one. As such, those films wouldn't really start showing up until a bit later, so the period between 1985 and 1986 felt more like the genre was drawing a deep breath before really going full throttle in 1987,  speeding directly into a Silver Age spurred on by the increasing popularity of direct-to-video and shot-on-video offerings.

What we're left with in 1985 doesn't exactly inspire confidence. Yes, we've got Friday the 13th revving back up after its first alleged "final chapter" and Elm Street 2 already cementing the franchise's long reign of terror over the back half of the '80s. Other than that, however, it's a real grab bag of random holdouts that couldn't quite muster up the energy to make it to the market by 1984, when they were already past their sell-by date. 1985 saw 29 slashers in total, the exact same amount as the previous year. It's a slim year when compared to former years and upcoming years, but that's still so goddamn many. Let's take a gander at what's coming down the pike, shall we?

Well, well, well! Now that we're done covering the slasher films of 1983 and all of the ones we missed from 1980, 1981, and 1982, it's time to look forward into the bright glittering future that is 1984. 

1984 is the most Christlike of the slasher movie years because the genre had petered out and died by this point in the decade until one Mssr. Freddy Krueger swooped in toward the Fall and resurrected the entire enterprise with a wave of his clawed hand.

In fact, according to my research, not a single film was released in the first three months of the year, a dazzling stretch considering that there were only three months without a slasher over the entire first four years of the genre (April '80, December '81, and - weirdly - October '83). This year isn't particularly anemic, considering there are still 29 entries that came and went, but compared to the more fallow periods the slasher had and would have, that's downright paltry!

A reminder that, going forward, I'm still going to be focusing on less intensive capsule reviews for films, because that's all I have the strength and time for at the moment. But frankly, I'm still spitting out a startling word count, so I don't think you'll actually be suffering by me harnessing slightly more brevity.

So, it's November, huh? We've finally waded our way through the 1982 portion of the Census Bloodbath marathon! I promise to do my utmost to make sure that this next one doesn't also take four years. For your sake and mine! 

1983 is actually a pretty slim year for the slasher movie (on the scale of the 80's, of course, so there are still 32 of the damn things), as the first wave of the Golden Age starts to wind down. In fact, this is the only year of the 80's that doesn't feature an entry from either Michael, Jason, or Freddy (catch ya next year, buddy!). It was also skipped by Leatherface, though it at least saw the much delayed return of Norman Bates. 

But that franchise dry spell doesn't mean there won't be some excellent entries! Hopefully! Below, you can behold the list of what we'll be covering in the upcoming months, which will be updated with links as we go along.

Phew! We made it out of the slasher gauntlet of 1981! While it's known as the Golden Year, the rather comprehensive scope of this project necessitated that I also visit the worst slasher entries imaginable, so that might be why it took me, oh, two years to finish that particular section... I gotta pick up the pace.

1982 isn't going to give me a chance to catch my breath, because although we've left the Golden Age behind, the slasher boom was still hitting America in full force, giving us a whopping 44 titles.

I did it! I made it through my first year of Census Bloodbath! It only took me almost an entire year! Now we can get into the Golden Age, far enough away from the proto-slashers that To All a Goodnight and Silent Scream almost feel like a distant dream.

Now I know you're all excited for my all-encompassing closing thoughts on 1980, but due to their all-encompassy nature, it will take a bit for me to get it all down properly. An Incredible Journey

Ah, the 1980s. The Golden Age of slasher films. For a horror fan, just thinking of the decade conjures up images of hockey masks, butcher knives, and fountains of blood galore. But bobbing just beneath the surface of the more well-known (or well-received) slasher greats is a whole mess of chum. I recently discovered this when I looked into doing a "Best of (Year)" slasher feature for 1985 and realized that I had only seen 2 of the 23 slasher films released that year.

Me.

I've seen over 100 slasher films, but I'd seen a paltry two in that year. I was mortified. I decided there and then to commit myself to watching every single slasher movie from the entire decade of the 80's.

This is harder than it sounds, for more than one reason.

First, over 290 slasher movies were released in that decade alone.

Second, the slasher genre can be particularly tough to nail down. Yes, there's the psycho killer with the big knife mowing down camp counselors. But what if instead of a man, it's a team of murderous scarecrows? Or a pirate ghost? Or what if it's an action flick dressed up as a slasher movie to get attention? What now? Using my keen judgement, I have compiled an alarmingly comprehensive list  of films ranging from straight-up slashers to slasher tinged action showdowns to other subgenres of horror that were clearly influenced by the almighty slasher.

It was decided that I would go through them by year, reviewing each film chronologically by release date and then organizing a sort of End of Year compendium detailing the trends, the best and the worst, and giving a general history of where the slasher film was at that point in time.

Simple enough, right?

Guess again. Nothing about these guys is simple.

Even organizing them by year is a Rubik's Cube-level conundrum (I gotta get in the 80's mood, man). The dubious history of the slasher genre is rife with delayed releases due to moral panic or... well, terrible quality, as well as movies being re-released under a variety of names years later and being debuted in other countries before their American release. Basically, there is no way to get this perfect. But I tried, so here we go.

I'm obviously going to keep reviewing other movies while this is going on, and this feature might even take a backseat for weeks or even months at a time (come on, this is 300 movies we're talking about), but my goal as of right now is to try to get at least one a week (and hopefully more than that because at that rate, it will take me six years). Simple enough, right?

Some of these movies aren't available on Netflix. Those that aren't are usually available online somewhere (And weirdly enough, a ton of them are on YouTube. I guess the producers of Christmas Evil already have enough baggage that they don't need to worry about copyright infringement.). But. There are some that you can only watch after rubbing a magic lamp while jumping on one foot backwards in a circle in front of your bathroom mirror at midnight during the full moon, so wish me luck.
