I'm still trying to piece together exactly how I feel about it, and you're a much better barometer for judging quality vs. arthouse pretentiousness than Tim is. I can't BELIEVE he gave Jackie a 10/10, man.

Honestly, I was worried about the music, too. I don't care for jazz at all, but the movie does a great job of mixing up the styles and pulling you into the ones you don't like as much.

Also, yeah. I recently found out he wrote Grand Piano, which bumped him up a great deal more in my esteem than Whiplash did. And I did LIKE Whiplash. I gave it an 8/10. I just don't FEEL it that hard. Also, apparently he had a hand in 10 Cloverfield Lane as well, which is a good'un. I hope your backwards town gets La La Land soon so we can talk about it!Brennanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15399713449347559869noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7799692319538063538.post-45282200539170213832016-12-09T16:45:00.268-08:002016-12-09T16:45:00.268-08:00I think I'm looking forward to this. (And, of...I think I'm looking forward to this. (And, of course, it's not out here yet. In fact, I think the only thing that *did* come out was Office Christmas Party. Why? On the plus side, that means I can finally make some time to go see Moonlight, which I'm sure will be a TOTAL BLAST, and not at all depressing.)

Anyway, I think I'm looking forward to it: I really like Damien Chazelle--you might not've dug Whiplash too hard, but it was one of my favorites of 2014, and he wrote another one of my favorites of 2014, Grand Piano; and I like Ryan Gosling (mostly) and Emma Stone (mostly); and it *looks* just gorgeous, like a movie they haven't made in 60 years.

...But then I worry the music's gonna do nothing for me. I'm really hoping that in the context of the film, it'll do it. Because everything else is in the running for one of the best movies of 2016. And, hey, I wound up liking the music in Whiplash! So it could be great.Hunter Allenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10925220178171355473noreply@blogger.com
