I just think due to its massive scale, some of its seams are a little more blown up and obvious, which is hardly a bad thing, Brennanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15399713449347559869noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7799692319538063538.post-5550446244868062932017-01-24T07:41:22.988-08:002017-01-24T07:41:22.988-08:00You know, Empire isn't even my favorite--I'...You know, Empire isn't even my favorite--I'm one of those absolute weirdos whose favorite is Jedi--but Empire is maybe the lynchpin of the trilogy, which (of course) is pretty much the cinematic foundational text for just about anybody my age. So it's impossible to say with any objectivity or sense of proportion whether Star Wars or Jedi are the same kind of 10/10 super-classics I think they are without Empire: its quality improves both the film that succeeds it, and its predecessor. And how many first sequels can say that?

I'm kind of surprised you think some of the effects work doesn't hold up; that might be a matter of taste, since obviously a lot of it isn't "realistic." But compared to Star Wars (which I think is way more ramshackle than its revolutionary reputation suggests), Empire is one of the first VFX-driven action spectacles where I'd say there's not a dime's worth of difference in general technical quality between it and the most expensive movies of the present day, and of course it tends to be way more charming. (And the Yoda puppetting? Better than any CGI mocap character I can name. Though I suppose all he does is walk around and condescend, so maybe that's not a fair comparison.)Hunter Allenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10925220178171355473noreply@blogger.com
